Large grant helps IPS teachers improve physical education

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 8, 2015) – A $100,000 grant is helping Indianapolis Public Schools improve physical education. Dozens of P.E. teachers spent the day training to incorporate a new curriculum and new equipment into their classes.

The PHIT grant brings a much-needed boost to physical education programs that are often strapped for funding. IPS teachers are also gaining access to the OPEN curriculum, which blends physical activity with grammar tips and vocabulary lessons.

“It’s going to be actually implementing the literacy part and helping students that might be struggling in the classroom with adjectives, nouns, verbs,” said Kathy Langdon, IPS Health and Wellness Facilitator.

Teachers will be able to use free lesson plans available to them throughout the year. The goal is to follow a cross-curriculum, while increasing physical activity among students. Langdon said many students are lagging behind when it comes to daily activity levels.

“We are not meeting standards for 60 minutes a day from the CDC,” Langdon said. “We are averaging about 30 minutes every other day in our P.E. classes. The funding, of course, is vital in regards to the equipment because the physical education area doesn’t have funding.”

The OPEN curriculum is making a big difference nationwide. The curriculum is available for free to schools around the country. The creator of the program said he believes every student and child deserves access to an effective physical education program. Representatives from OPEN were on site Tuesday to train teachers at Short Ridge High School.
