Butler University assistant police chief on paid administrative leave after drunk driving arrest

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 8, 2015) —  Butler University Assistant Police Chief Andrew Ryan was arrested Saturday night on drunk driving charges following a traffic collision.

According to a police report, Assistance Police Chief Andrew Ryan was driving on the city’s east side near the intersection of North Arlington Avenue and East Washington Street around 6:15 p.m. when he collided with another car.

Ryan blew a BAC of .27. He was off duty, not in uniform, and in his personal car at the time of the incident.

Ryan was booked in the Marion County Jail on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was released after posting $150 bail on Sunday.

Butler University released this statement Tuesday:

We are aware of the report and we take situations like this very seriously. We are still collecting information, but we are able to confirm at this time that the officer in question was neither on duty nor operating a University vehicle. We will share more when we are able.

Assistant Chief Ryan is on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
