INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 7, 2015)- September is Hunger Action Month.

It’s a chance to raise awareness about a problem that affects one in five Hoosiers.

Gleaners Food Bank served close to 300,000 families in central Indiana with some sort of food assistance in 2014.

The organization is shining a light on food insecurity this month.

September is a time when or organizations will host food drives for food banks.

During Hunger Action Month last year, one business donated 3.5 tons of peanut butter to Gleaners.

This campaign is also a chance for food banks to remind people that this problem still exists and affects people from all walks of like.

“They can be people that live on our streets, they can be people that send their children to the same school as ours too and it starts with understanding that issue,” said Steve Benway Community Engagement Coordinator for Gleaners Food Bank.

Gleaners is also encouraging people to join the “Spoontember” movement.

All people have to do is a take a selfie with a spoon on their nose and then post it to social media.

The food bank says “Spoontember” is a great way to make people aware of the fight against hunger.
