Jared Fogle leaves court on Aug. 19, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (Aug. 19, 2015)– Is it an addiction or an excuse? That’s the question many are asking after Jared Fogle’s attorney said the former Subway pitchman is already seeking treatment for a medical problem.

“Jared also knows that he has a medical problem. He has already sought evaluation by a world class psychiatrist experienced in these matters and he will seek appropriate treatment,” Jeremy Margolis, Fogle’s defense attorney.

In recent years, celebrities who have been caught doing the wrong thing in their personal lives have claimed to be suffering from a sexual addiction. Tiger Woods and David Duchovny are just a couple of the high profile names who have sought treatment.

Carol Juergensen-Sheets is a licensed clinical social worker and sex therapist. She hasn’t evaluated Fogle, but she has a good idea what he’s going through.

“Jared is suffering from an exploitative sexual addiction—he exploits children,” said Juergensen Sheets.

Investigators say Fogle used his fame wealth and status to travel the country and engage in sexual acts with underage sex workers—only furthering the underground sex trade.

“If Mr. Fogle had done the right thing when he learned of the victimization of the first victim, the first girl who was 14, if he had reported that to authorities victims two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten never would have been sexually victimized,” said Steve Debrota, senior litigation counsel.

“All of the research is showing that the average age of entry into commercial sex work is 12 or 13 years old,” said Theresa Hayden, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville and a human trafficking expert.

Fogle is accused of hiring prostitutes who were older than 18 and paying them a finder’s fee for younger girls. It’s estimated that tens of thousands of children are sold as sex slaves every year.

“I think what this points out is how easy it is to be done. We have someone here who is very well known and he is caught up in this,” said Hayden.

“I definitely think its an addiction, and I don’t blame people for wondering about this. This is a new field. We have always had sexual addiction but with the internet it became so much more common,” said Juergensen-Sheets.

Juergensen-Sheets says “sex addiction” was recently excluded from the manual of psychiatric disorders.
