INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Aug. 18, 2015)– Police said armed robbery suspect Michael Henderson, 21, shot himself before detectives and federal agents opened fire behind a north side apartment building Monday night.

Henderson and Dequan Washington, 21, were tracked after an armed robbery at a Hardees restaurant at 56th Street and Emerson Way.

Investigators suspect the pair in perhaps a dozen armed robberies this summer from Indianapolis to Mooresville.

As Henderson’s white Jeep Cherokee met a dead end behind the Marcy Village Apartments on 46th Street between College and Keystone Avenues, Washington fled from the passenger side of the vehicle while pursuing IMPD detectives and FBI agents heard a gunshot from inside the SUV.

The agents and detectives opened fire.

Still visible at the scene today was orange paint marking where dozens of shell casings fell on the pavement.

“There is other way they could’ve did that,” said Crystal Cousins as she surveyed the scene. “They could have…I just don’t understand it. They could have did it in a different way though I would have rather him been in jail then dead any day.”

Cousins said Henderson worked at temporary jobs and was returning to the apartment of his brother though she was not aware that her cousin was a suspect in several armed robberies.

“I mean, if he was living that type of life, he was keeping it in the streets.”

Henderson and Washington had been on the radar of IMPD robbery detectives for some time.

“At this point we think these two are the ones involved in a number of robberies in the Indianapolis area,” said IMPD Lt. Richard Riddle. “We believe that these two individuals were responsible for multiple take over robberies throughout Indianapolis where a firearm was used and sometimes discharged inside of a business.”

The Morgan County Prosecutor today filed robbery and confinement charges against Washington and Henderson for the stick up of a fast food restaurant in Mooresville on August 11.

Witnesses positively identified photographs of the two men, and Henderson’s Jeep, as being involved in the robbery.

Henderson had a previous felony conviction for criminal confinement.

Riddle said there will be an investigation to determine if officers and agents overreacted in the number of shots fired after Henderson shot himself.

“Ultimately that would be up to the prosecutors office to determine whether or not the amount of force that was used last night was reasonable in light of the violent felonies and the armed individuals that our officers encountered last night.”

Riddle said a gun was recovered from the vehicle.
