BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (Aug. 18, 2015)– A woman is dead after her car collided with a semi Tuesday morning on U.S. 52 in Boone County.

The fatal crash caused northbound lanes to be closed for a couple of hours. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 7:30 a.m. near County Road 700 North. The area serves as the detour for I-65 north since the bridge in Lafayette is closed.

Investigators say another driver was reaching for a cup of coffee, when she ran off the road, crossing the median and striking the victim’s vehicle head-on. The impact forced the victim’s car into a semi.

The victim, later identified as 45-year-old Jacquelin Harp of Lebanon, Ind., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other female driver suffered minor injuries, and the semi driver was not injured.

Police say this tragedy is a reminder of the dangers of distracted driving.

“But one moment of distraction unfortunately, whether it be a cup of coffee, or looking off the side of the road, or your radio, your cell phone, or whatever, can be a catastrophic event,” said Sgt. Richard Myers, Indiana State Police.
