INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 17, 2015) - Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) are investigating after a video has gone viral showing a fight on school property.
IPS officials tell CBS4 News the fight happened over the weekend in front of Thomas D. Gregg Elementary School. Officials said the people involved in the fight are not students at the elementary school. IPS Police are looking at both surveillance video and the viral video to determine if the people involved in the fight are IPS students at any school.
“We’re looking into the authenticity of the video, when it was taken and who the parties involved are," explained IMPD Public Information Officer, Rafael Diaz.
In the video, you can see one woman punching, kicking, and throwing another woman to the floor. The ages of the people involved have not been released. Diaz added, what's most concerning about the viral video is teens and young children are witnessing the confrontation play out.
“There’s a lot of people that don’t know how to handle conflict and are too quick to settle and to go into violence," Diaz said.
This is the second fight in less than one week on IPS school property. Last week, IPS officials confirmed a fight involving 7th and 8th graders inside Arlington Community High School.
Diaz said while school fights aren't uncommon, we may be seeing more of them because of access to social media.
“We all have cell phones and we have other means of accessing all this information," Diaz said.
IMPD will investigate this fight just like any other. Diaz said while there may be video of the fight, it doesn't show the whole story.
“Just because we have that information out there, it is a start and it’s a good start for us. Our investigators, in any case are assigned, they need to start from the very beginning and then go from there," Diaz said.
