BEECH GROVE, Ind. (Aug. 17, 2015) – A man who shot himself in the head after a shoplifting incident at a central Indiana Walmart last week has died.

Beech Grove police said Gillace Samples, 42, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound over the weekend. Samples and another man had been detained for shoplifting from the Walmart at 4650 S. Emerson Ave. on Aug. 13.

Samples pulled a handgun and left the store. Police found him at Egg Roll. No. 1, a nearby Chinese restaurant, where customers saw him hiding in the bathroom. Police said Samples shot himself in the head as officers closed in.

He had been wanted on two outstanding warrants: one for a parole violation and another for being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a July 29 shooting in Indianapolis.

Another man, 42-year-old Johnny Maxey, was arrested in the shoplifting case and charged with theft. Beech Grove’s mayor declared the Walmart a public nuisance after the incident, citing numerous problems at the location.
