INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 13, 2015) -- A west side family is dealing with unimaginable loss. Their two-year-old son is dead after being hit by a car. It happened around 6:20 p.m. at the corner of North Centennial Street and West 12th Street.
"It's sad, I can't believe this one," said Otto Duffy, a friend of the boy's family.
Duffy says he's known the little boy's family for years, since the boy's father was growing up. That's why this is hitting him especially hard. Duffy says he's offered words of strength to the boy's father not too long after.
"You gotta be strong, I'll be there for you as long as I can, as much as I can be there for," Duffy said.
When police arrived, they found the child and tried desperately to save him, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly began figuring out what happened.
"The child came from the home that is located right at the corner of the intersection. The child just came out from the front yard and ran in to the middle of the street and was struck by the vehicle," said Officer Rafael Diaz with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).
Police don't believe alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash, but traffic investigators conducted a blood draw on the woman driving the black SUV which is standard in such an investigation. Right now, though, it looks like it's just a tragic accident. There is no word on any charges filed.
