INDIANAPOLIS (July 30, 2015) – The Attorney General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit Thursday against Speedway’s former fire chief.

Mark Watson is accused of misusing $62,000 in funds from the Town of Speedway, using that money for personal expenses including car payments, credit card payments and purchases like a TV set, grill, a gun and other items.

The lawsuit filed by Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s Office Thursday seeks full repayment of the tax dollars plus damages and reimbursement of $21,000 the state spent investigating the matter.

Watson suddenly stepped down as Speedway’s fire chief in October 2014. Earlier this month, the reason behind his resignation became clear: an audit from the State Board of Accounts showed Watson misused thousands of dollars through a personal checking account and town credit card. Ineligible purchases included a Toyota Tacoma truck, snow blowers, clothing and home improvement items, the audit found.

The audit concluded that Watson was able to make the purchases using town money due to poor oversight and a lack of internal control.
