Police: Intoxicated man hits, kills pedestrian on US 31 in Bartholomew County

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (July 27, 2015)—Police say a Franklin, Indiana man was under the influence of alcohol when he hit a woman on US 31, killing her.

Deputies with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of US 31 near Random Road around 1:43 a.m. Sunday in reference to a person struck. When they arrived, they found a deceased woman, who was identified as Selena Coram, 36, of Columbus.

Authorities say Coram was walking in the northbound lane when she was struck by a pickup truck driven by 42-year-old Jaison Acton. According to the investigation, deputies say Coram was in a vehicle heading eastbound on Random Road approaching US 31 when, for unknown reasons, she exited the vehicle and ran onto the roadway crossing the southbound lanes, before she was struck in the northbound lane.

Acton was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital to undergo a blood draw on suspicion of being intoxicated. He was later taken to the Bartholomew County Jail.
