MORRISTOWN, N.J. (July 23, 2015) — The founder of Craigslist has donated $10,000 for a composting toilet that will be named in his honor by a northern New Jersey organization.

Grow It Green Morristown says Craig Newmark’s donation will likely cover the purchase of the toilet for the group’s Early Street Community Garden. Newmark spent the first 12 years of his life across the street from the community garden, which used to be a junkyard.

He told NJ.com that he loves what people can do using the Internet, but he says clean water and sanitation matter more.

Also, it’s entirely possible I have a sense of humor,” Newmark said.

According to LetsGoGreen.com, composting toilets use the natural processes of decomposition and evaporation to recycle human waste. Waste entering the toilets is over 90% water, which is evaporated and carried back to the atmosphere through the vent system. The small amount of remaining solid material is converted to useful fertilizing soil by natural decomposition.

These toilets generally use little to no water and may be used as an alternative to flush toilets.

The garden’s commode will be called the “Craig Newmark Memorial Latrine No. 2.”
