Case dismissed: Muncie mother arrested after police find 3-year-old girl alone
Update (May 16, 2016) – According to Delaware County courts, this case has been dismissed. Therefore, we have retraced the woman’s name from this post.
MUNCIE, Ind. (July 17, 2015) – Neighbors are upset and confused as to why a Muncie mother allegedly left her three-year-old daughter home alone for several hours. Muncie Police say they were called to this apartment on Main Street Wednesday night after neighbors found a three year-old girl sitting outside alone and scared on the front steps.
“She is a single mom. I really don’t know what would motivate her to do that. I can’t think of a good reason,” said neighbor Andrew Saxon.
When police arrived to the scene they spoke with the child who didn’t know where her mom was.
“She pretty much said, my mom is not here,” said Muncie Police Sgt. Linda Cook.
According to the police report filed, the Muncie police officer found a Black charcoal grill propped up against the front door.
“I guess the grill was used to prop against the door to not allow the children to escape, but these kids are pretty agile and if they want to get out. They will get out. It’s pretty sad because anything could happen to them,” said Sgt. Cook.
Muncie Police eventually got in contact with her; she was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of neglect. Neighbors say this is not the first time that she has allegedly abandoned her child. Neighbors tell FOX59 News she leaves home for several hours and comes back in the middle of the night.
“I think once is definitely enough. I hope the little girl is taken better care of in the future,” said Saxon.
Last year a family who lives nearby saw the child hanging out of the upstairs window. Joyce was allegedly leaving the house, until someone yelled out that her kid was in extreme danger.
“There are just so many bad things that could happen. Nothing good is going to happen by leaving your child alone,” said Sgt. Cook.
We tried to talk with Joyce, but no one answered the door.
“She was released this morning, probably made bail. The child was detained by child protective services,” said Sgt. Cook.
