(July 6, 2015) – A Purdue student is recovering after donating a kidney to his brother.
Jamelle Walker went into cardiac arrest last year. His kidneys failed and he went into a coma for three weeks.
When the father of four woke up, he had severe brain damage, and he lost function in both of his kidneys. He was on dialysis most every day.
Jamelle’s younger brother Javon was a match for a kidney transplant. So on June 11, Javon donated his kidney to Jamelle.
The recovery time for the brothers will take months, but Javon says he couldn’t imagine not helping his brother. "I was really scared because I never thought about losing my brother or anything or how bad it could be,” said Javon.
Javon is a junior at Purdue University, and he relies on internships and a job to pay for his tuition and books. But because of the surgery, Javon is not able to work this summer.
"He had to sacrifice so much for me, and I'm very grateful,” said Jamelle.
The brothers set up a GoFundMe page for Javon to help take the sting out of missing work.
