BUNKER HILL, Ind. (AP) — A group of inmates at a northern Indiana prison who raised $10,000 by selling items to fellow inmates have donated the money to a group that helps former prisoners and the homeless.

The inmates at the Miami Correctional Facility about 60 miles southwest of Fort Wayne donated the money to the Gilead House. The Kokomo group’s executive director, Reba Harris, says the money will be vital to keeping the outreach center going.

She tells the Kokomo Tribune (http://bit.ly/1NGVRsp ) “the funds will go a long way to helping individuals in our community.”

The inmates raised the money by selling headphones, tennis shoes, watches, food and other items to fellow inmates.

More than 1,500 inmates placed orders for more than 6,000 items, with most of the proceeds going to the Gilead House.
