A train and car collided in the 1600 block of Epler Ave. on the city’s south side early Thursday morning.

The crash happened just before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Madison Ave. and E Epler Ave.

Police believe the Ford Taurus was traveling eastbound on Epler when it tried to beat the train, traveling south, across the tracks.

Police said the train struck the car on the driver’s side and dragged it more than 200 yards.

The four people in the car, one adult and three minors, were all able to make it out. One minor who was sitting in the backseat behind the driver is in serious condition and was transported to Eskenazi. Officers say the other three passengers will likely also be transported to Eskenazi for observation.

The car sat on the track for several hours until crews could remove it around 6:15 a.m.

Police confirmed to CBS4 that there is a strong possibility narcotics were involved in this accident, and they are actively investigating.
