Indianapolis mother sentenced in attempted murder of baby
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 13, 2015)– A mother received her sentence Wednesday after she pleaded guilty to trying to kill her baby.
Brianna Holland was sentenced to 30 years, and will spend 20 of those years in prison.
Holland delivered her baby at her workplace, then dumped it in a trash can with toilet paper wrapped around its neck on August 1, 2014. She said she was scared and didn’t know what to do.
A maintenance worker found the baby and an on-site nurse was able to treat the child.
Detectives said Holland never called for help. She had a cell phone. Her twin sister and stepfather both work at the factory, but she never asked them for help, police said. The facility also has a medical facility. She could have had her sister drive her to the hospital or driven herself, police said. Instead, she gave birth and went back to work.
Holland pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Prosecutors say this should serve as a reminder about Indiana’s Safe Haven law. A baby can be dropped off at any hospital, fire station or police station without fear of legal consequences.
The Wayne Township Fire Department was right across the street from where Holland gave birth.
