DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. (May 13, 2015)– A county fair tradition won’t happen this year. Hog wrestling was canceled Wednesday night for the Delaware County Fair.

Hog wrestling is when a four-person team is timed as they try to catch a pig and place the pig in a barrel in the middle of a muddy pit. The fair board voted to cancel the event after backlash from people who say it is animal cruelty.

At the open meeting where the event was voted on, officials say nobody opposing the hog wrestling showed up. Most of the opposition came from people outside of Delaware County. The vote to cancel was unanimous.

The Delaware County Fair held a hog wrestling event for at least the past five years. They are now looking for replacement entertainment.

Thousands of people signed a petition opposing the event in just a few days.

The fair runs from July 19 to July 25.
