AVON, Ind. (May 7, 2015) - Investigators found 10,000 files of child pornography on a man’s computer in Avon. He was arrested late Wednesday night at his house in the 6800 block of Connie Drive in Avon.

Detectives said Thursday that executing the search warrant was just the beginning. Their work is cut out for them as they go through computers, tablets and cell phones looking for even more evidence.

“The search warrant is step three of 40,” said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Detective Darin Odier with the cyber-crimes unit.

Indiana State Police and IMPD cyber-crimes units swarmed the house of James Venable, 54, Wednesday. They were seen taking a laptop, where investigators say 10,000 child porn files were found.

“They keep the place nice. Oh my God, that’s a shock,” said Venable’s neighbor, Charlie McWilliams.

“That was just on one device and when you consider you can put thousands of images on one CD, when we’re talking about computers, tablets, thumb drives, external media–that’s not that uncommon,” said Odier.

Odier said there could be multiple arrests like Venable’s every week, but there just simply isn’t the manpower to do it.

“The workload for our taskforce is such that, we have the work to do three search warrants a week on people that are exploiting children sexually online and in person. You’ve heard about a couple in the last week but that’s very much the norm for us unfortunately,” he said

This comes after the recent arrest of former Jared Foundation Executive, Russell Taylor. He faces federal child porn charges.

“It is so prevalent and nobody’s wearing a sign that says ‘I’m sexually attracted to children,’” said Odier.

Venable was not a registered sex offender. A preschool sits down the road from his house. He’s being held in the Hendricks County Jail and his bond has not yet been set.
