WESTFIELD, Ind. (May 6, 2015) - Orange cones and construction crews are taking over access ramps and roadways in Westfield, as the Indiana Department of Transportation works on rebuilding the new freeway. Crews have closed US 31 to State Road 32 and the entrance ramp from State Road 32 northbound on US 31.
The southbound access areas remain open, but drivers are dealing with confusing detours.
“People get confused at the roundabout and then block the roundabout because people can’t get into the roundabout. Then it gets backed up even further,” said driver Josh Cournia.
The construction is also causing problems for local businesses like Westfield Tire and Muffler, which is located at the center of the construction confusion.
“We have learned that now when someone calls and makes an appointment with us, we tell them the best way to get to us. We ask them which way are you coming from and we try to give them the best route,” said Westfield Tire and Muffler owner Tim Shaw.
Currently, drivers going north on US 31 must continue north to the interchange at State Road 38, exit and reenter US 31 going southbound. That’s when you can finally enter State Road 32. If you’re traveling in either direction on State Road 32, you will need to enter US 31 headed south and use 161st Street.
INDOT recommendeds the following detours: Going north, exit at State Road 38, get back on 31. Going south, then exit onto 32. If you're on 32, get onto 31 south regardless of which direction you want to go. Then use the 161st street roundabout if you need to head north.
Crews anticipate opening the northbound US 31 exit ramp by Memorial Day.
