CUMBERLAND, Ind. (May 6, 2015)– A church in Cumberland is one step closer to being demolished. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission voted in favor of a re-zoning request for the historic church’s land.

The congregation of Saint John United Church wants to sell the land to a grocery store chain, who plans to build a gas station.

It’s been at the intersection of East Washington St. and German Church road for man than 100 years. Members say they simply can’t afford the upkeep for the crumbling building and its time to build a new location.

The Indianapolis City-County Council must approve the decision at an upcoming meeting.
