BROWN COUNTY, Ind. (April 18, 2015) — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management confirms that a tanker spilled between 400 and 500 gallons of ammonia Saturday afternoon in Brown County in the area of 5300 Gatesville Road.

Officials say a vehicle clipped a tanker carrying anhydrous ammonia that was being pulled by a tractor, which caused the tanker to overturn and spill the ammonia.

County dispatcher said people within a square mile of the accident were evacuated and the Red Cross set up an evacuation center at the YMCA, but it was closed later Saturday afternoon.

A handful of people complained of eye irritation due to the ammonia, but no other injuries were reported because of the ammonia.

Both IDEM and the Environmental Protection Agency have officials on scene to make sure the environment is properly cleaned up.
