INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 11, 2015) — April 11 is National Pet Day – the day to celebrate our furry, and sometimes feathery or scaly, friends!
According to an article by the ASPCA, there are around 70-80 million dogs and up to 96 million cats owned in the United States. That means that about 37-47 of all households have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat. Most pets come to their new homes through family members and around 29% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters. More than 35% of cats are strays before finding their forever home.
Just over 7 million of those pets enter shelters around the country each year. Some of those are relinquished by owners who can no longer take care of them, or who are moving to a place that doesn’t allow pets. 35% of dogs and 37% of cats are lucky enough to be adopted after entering a shelter. Those numbers add up to around 2.7 million shelter animals being adopted each year.
