INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 12, 2015) – Mayor Greg Ballard signed into law Proposal 22 which authorizes the hiring of up to 155 new IMPD officers in 2015.

It appropriates $21,366,466 collected from the new Public Safety Income Tax into the 2015 Budgets of Marion Superior Court, Marion County Sheriff, Community Corrections, Marion County Prosecutor, Public Defender Agency, Forensic Services Agency, Marion County Coroner, and the Department of Public Safety, IMPD and Animal Care and Control Divisions for various public safety initiatives.

The following is a statement from Mayor Ballard regarding this action:

“After nearly two years of requests to fund additional officers, I am glad the Council sees the wisdom in this, and I look forward to welcoming in new recruits this year. Even though I am pleased with the addition of new officers, it is critical that we also continue efforts to implement comprehensive community programs to address the root causes of crime.”
