INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 5, 2015) – The Pike Township Fire Department responded to a house fire on the city’s northwest side Thursday morning.

The call came in at about 5:30 a.m. in the 6900 block of North Pershing Avenue near 71st Street and Michigan Road.

The fire started in the bedroom and continued to spread. It burned through the floor into the crawl space.

The three occupants were able to escape without injuries, but their two dogs died inside.

When crews arrived heavy flames were showing from the outside of the building. Firefighters experienced some difficulties because a hydrant was frozen, but they were able to get it under control in about ten minutes.

The Indianapolis Fire Department assisted on the run.
