Sister of teens kidnapped Monday ‘feels responsible’ for their abduction
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 4, 2015) – Whitney Blackwell said three armed gunmen were looking for her when they showed up to her family’s home and kidnapped her siblings. The men kidnapped Emma and Aaron Blackwell on Monday, prompting an Amber Alert that extended to Michigan. The teens were sleeping in their home in the 1200 block of North LaSalle when the men showed up at 2:30 a.m. Both teens were safely recovered.
Blackwell admits she stole money from an alleged drug dealer, Jay, whose real name is John Thomas. She said she met Jay while working as a stripper at Club Venus in Detroit. His lifestyle enticed her, he bought her a car, house and took care of her son.
“I thought it was the best thing ever because I didn’t have to work at the strip club or nothing no more,” said Blackwell.
According to court documents, Blackwell is accused of stealing $120,000 in drug money, a kilo of cocaine and 4,000 Oxycontin pills. During a jailhouse interview with CBS4 she denied taking drugs or that much cash. Blackwell said she stole about $43,000 from the house then fled Detroit.
“I didn’t take all that money they said I took and I did not take the drugs I only took some of the money and I left a lot of it there, now I had two of my baby sitters that he paid to watch me at all times in the house. I don’t know what happened when I left, I know I left when with enough so me and my son could be ok,” said Blackwell.
Court documents detail how the kidnappers demanded ransom in exchange for the safe return of the teens. They called family members at least eight times within a two hour period. Blackwell said they threatened to harm the teens and cut their fingers off. When police found Aaron, they noticed his fingers were cut and he was taken to the hospital to get stitches.
Blackwell’s ex-boyfriend, Thomas, is facing federal charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
A week before the kidnapping, Blackwell decided to leave Detroit and get out of the relationship. She said she escaped through a window with her six-year-old son.
Blackwell said her son is currently in the care of Child Protective Services.
The teens were separated during the kidnapping. Police found Aaron Blackwell in Detroit. They believe his sister Emma was transported to Detroit, Kentucky and Ohio. Court documents show the kidnappers dropped her off at a Taco Bell in Dayton, Ohio and gave her $200 to take a taxi back home.
