INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 27, 2015) -- After this winter storm passes, it's not only important, it's the law to go out and clear the sidewalks in front of where you work or live. If the sidewalk still isn't shoveled, you could be fined.

"Public safety is the main factor and just being a good neighbor," said Tom Weber, manager of property safety and maintenance with the Department of Code Enforcement in Indianapolis.

If you don't go clear it off from any sidewalk, it could cause someone to fall down.

"It's any sidewalk that abuts commercial or residential properties," Weber said.

Code Enforcement officials have responded to 23 complaints of sidewalks not shoveled this winter. Far less than last winter of course, but they're still important. Complaints phoned in to the Mayor's Action Line are checked out by someone from Code Enforcement. The person responsible will be reminded of their job to shovel.

"It's really important to keep it clean and make it accessible for the guests to go back and forth," said Zach Wilks, manager of Hotel Tango Distillery in Fountain Square.

Safety is so important to him, he'll trade his manager's hat for a winter hat.

"Most definitely," Wilks said. There's a couple of snow shovels in the back and depending on it happens we're out there doing it. We've got bags of salt out back, too, so we try to keep it as safe as we can."

If you need to report a sidewalk that has not been shoveled, you can call the Mayor's Action Center at (317) 327-4622.
