FOREST LAKE, MN (February 18, 2015) – “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” isn’t a holiday created by little kids who wanted to eat dessert for breakfast – this holiday actually has a very special story.

According to myfoxdetroit.com, a family created this day to honor their daughter Malia and other kids who have lost their lives to cancer, to support the kids fighting cancer, and to celebrate the survivors.

9-year-old Malia Grace passed away after a long fight with cancer in 2010. Malia’s family said she loved ice cream, so each year on her birthday Malia’s family let her eat ice cream for breakfast.

In 2013, her friends and family started an “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” in her honor by posting pictures and videos of themselves eating ice cream for breakfast on social media. The story went viral, and in the past two years thousands of people from over 12 nations participated in the special holiday.

Myfoxdetroit.com reports that last year “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” became an official day on daysoftheyear.com to honor all children who have battled childhood cancer.

According to the Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Facebook page, people from 83 different countries are supporting, remembering and celebrating the international holiday today.

You can participate in the fun by sharing your photos on their Facebook page with the hashtags #icecreamforbreakfast and #kidsgetcancertoo.
