Teacher investigated after mother finds messages between daughter and teacher
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 9, 2015) – Lawrence Township Schools officials and Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating a mother’s claims that her 15-year-old daughter received several inappropriate messages from a teacher at Lawrence North High School.
The mother, who did not want to be identified, called police Jan. 27 after discovering text and Facebook messages between her daughter and the teacher. While the messages are not expressly sexual in nature, the mother says the conversations cross the line of an appropriate student-teacher relationship.
“And he’s asking ‘Where are you?’ and saying ‘I love you, I miss you, sending love taps,’” the mother said.
Transcripts of several Facebook conversations over several evenings included the following exchanges:
Teacher: “I miss you girl and love you!!”
Student: “Love you too…”
Teacher: “Those were love taps. Love you”
Student: “Love ya”
Teacher: “I missed you last period:
Student: “Sorry. She made me file papers… Lol”
Teacher: “That is ok. I just missed you. How was your day”
Teacher: “Why? What happen?”
Student: “Just idk. Everything.”
Teacher: “I am giving you a big hug.”
A later portion of the conversation included:
Teacher: “Why can’t you sleep? Too many things on your mind?”
Student: “Yeah kinda. Why you asking so many questions.? Lol”
Teacher: “Just having conversation. I will stop.”
Student: “Lol okay”
Teacher: “Where are you staying this weekend?”
Teacher: “Where are you now? Home?”
Teacher: “Where you at?”
Student: “My dads”
Teacher: “I would take you”
The mother of the student says her daughter described the teacher as “everybody’s favorite teacher” and “very nice.”
“After a while she said yeah, it made me feel uncomfortable,” the mother said.
The Department of Child Services says IMPD referred the case to them for investigation. DCS could not comment on the status of the case, but IMPD said early Monday that the case is still open. Lawrence Township School officials say they are also gathering information and the situation is still being investigated.
CBS4 is not identifying the teacher since he has not been arrested or charged with any crimes.
The teen’s mother says she is concerned for her daughter’s safety, and the safety of other students in the school. She believes the messages show the signs of a child predator. She also says her daughter has been taken out of the teacher’s class. Text and Facebook messaging between her daughter and the teacher have been blocked.
The mother says Lawrence Township School officials suspended the teacher when the investigation started. Lawrence Township Schools officials would not comment on the current status of the teacher.
“I think he should be fired,” the mother said. “I think he should not be allowed to teach anywhere, or be around any student.”
The mother plans to file a formal complaint with the Lawrence Township School Board.
