BUNKER HILL, Ind. (February 3, 2015) - A school employee faces five felony charges involving her students.
Miami County sheriff’s deputies have been investigating 41-year-old Michelle Ladd for the past year. Court papers reveal Ladd had sexual relationships with two of her 17-year-old students.
Investigators say the first relationship started back in 2010. Supposedly one of her students told Ladd that he didn’t have enough money to reinstate his driver’s license. Ladd allegedly told the teen that he could work on her and her husband’s farm in exchange for money. Investigators believe Ladd and the 17-year-old started having a sexual relationship a few months after.
In addition to sexual relationships, court papers show that Ladd also spent thousands of dollars on the victim including buying him alcohol and two cars.
“In cases like this it reaches out to a lot of victims; family, friends, and community organizations. It touches a lot of people. There’s a lot of emotion that goes with the case,” explains Captain Gary Glassburn with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.
Court papers show Ladd visited another student when he was in Kinsey Juvenile Center. Investigators believe soon after the 17-year-old was released is when he and Ladd’s relationship started.
Detectives believe Ladd not only bought this 17-year-old alcohol, but also guns, despite his criminal past.
“(It’s) out of leftfield. It’s a surprise. It’s a shock because she’s been very effective in the classroom,” explains Dr. Doug Arnold, superintendent of Maconaquah School Corporation.
Ladd worked with middle and high schoolers in the alternative schools, programs that help students who are struggling with schoolwork or social skills.
“It’s shocking any way you look at it. It’s not something we ever expect from our staff,” explains Arnold.
Ladd has been charged with child seduction, illegal transfer of handguns and furnishing alcohol to a minor.
