INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 2, 2015)—A 17-year-old man arrested in the murder of a 13-year-old boy will be charged as an adult.

Dino Thompson III is charged with one count of murder in the shooting death of Ashton Harting, who was killed on the morning of Jan. 19.

Officers responded to the 3700 block of Decamp Drive in reference to someone shot. When they arrived, they found Harting on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Before the person was caught, I thought he [Harding] died for a senseless thing and I still feel that way. The fact that someone has been caught is a reassuring feeling,” said Jalen Vaughn, Harting’s cousin.

According to court documents, Harting and four others were walking around the neighborhood. In interviews with police, the four witnesses said they were kicking over trash cans and looking into people’s cars.  The witnesses reported someone yelled at them about knocking over the trash cans, before firing shots at the group. Another witness reported the suspect approached the group and fired shots, before fleeing the scene, read the probable cause.

“I’m really hurt because my 17-year-old  son is downtown with a murder charge. That’s serious! He’s only 17,” said Dawn Thompson, Dino’s mother.

When Thompson III was questioned by police he told them that he thought a car crashed into the trash cans, so he ran outside to get a license plate number.

However, his girlfriend, Dominique Smith, told police that she,  “Observed Dino Thompson III grab a silver handgun from the dresser of his bedroom and exit out of the residence with a subject known to her as ‘Savage’ or ‘Trai’ (Terrell),” read court documents.

Smith said the men went outside for a few minutes and then she heard 3-4 gunshots,” according to court documents.

“I just hope that justice is served and both his family and ours can move on,” said Vaughn.

Thompson III denies having a handgun or firing at anybody.

Police arrested 17-year-old Thompson III on Jan. 31. He will appear in court Tuesday for his initial hearing.
