INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 1, 2015) — The Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating a fire that killed a puppy Sunday night. Homeowner Chris Myers, 47, was at the residence watching the Super Bowl with his 10-week-old Boxer, Bella. Meyers said at one point during the game he went downstairs to the kitchen, and he left his plate of food on the dresser next to lit candles.

While he was in the kitchen, he heard the upstairs smoke detectors. He ran back upstairs and saw the top of the dresser in flames. Meyers attempted to put the fire out himself, but he was unsuccessful and he received burns to his hands

Fire crews were called to his home in the 2800 block of North New Jersey Street around 8:45 p.m.

Firefighters found Bella unresponsive and performed chest compression and used the Pet Rescue Device to try to save her. Unfortunately, rescuers were unable to resuscitate the puppy. Meyers was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was confined to the room but has substantial water damage. Damages are estimated at $10,000. The cause is still under investigation, but Meyers believes that Bella may have knocked over the candles while eating the plate of food on the dresser.
