Coroner identifies teen shot and killed at east side park
UPDATE: Police arrested a suspect in the case.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Police have now identified the 18-year-old who was shot and killed at an eastside park as Deante Williams. The case has now been ruled a homicide.
“We do not believe this is a random act. This guy was targeted for whatever reason and for whatever business was going on,” said IMPD Cpt. Harold Turner.
Police believe the incident started as an armed robbery at an east side park and ended with the murder of Deante Williams.
“Officers responded with medics and observed a male that was shot several times in the mid-section,” said Turner.
Investigators tell us Williams was meeting up with another teenager at Wes Montgomery Park Sunday night when he was shot at least three times in the stomach.
“Preliminarily our investigators believe this may have been an attempted robbery involving possible narcotics,” said IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams.
Police believe the shooter is a male teen. Investigators say the shooter spoke to Williams on the phone at some point before they met up. Detectives also say the shooter took off from the scene on foot.
“The more honest and the more helpful the witnesses and girlfriends are then the more solvable the case will be,” said Cpt. Turner.
This incident adds another teenage homicide to the ongoing and growing issue of youth violence.
“There are a lot of people that are concerned at the ages of some of these horrific crimes that we are seeing in our community and it is starting to ring a bell with people that we have to do something,” said Sgt. Adams.
As police continue to sort through phone records and follow up with witnesses they still need the public’s help. If you have information on the murder of Deante Williams call IMPD or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
