Man wanted in connection with triple slaying in Washington County found dead

Richard Lee Burton

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ind. — A man suspected of killing three people in Washington County has been found dead.

Police were looking for Richard Lee Burton Jr. after three people were found dead at a home in Washington County. Investigators said the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department received a tip about Burton and found his vehicle parked in Monroe County along State Road 446 near Blackwell Horse Camp inside Hoosier National Forest.

Police found Burton’s truck and made yet another deadly discovery.

“When the Monroe county deputies walked up to the vehicle, they found Richard Burton deceased in the cab of the truck,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodwin.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office will determine Burton’s cause of death.

Authorities had been looking for Burton after the Washington County Sheriff’s Department did a welfare check at a residence located at 5882 South Beck’s Mill Road, in rural Washington County (approximately 14 miles from Salem) around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The welfare check was the result of a phone call from someone worried about the well-being of the occupants of the residence.

When a deputy arrived at the residence, he noticed a deceased person inside. Other police officers arrived at the scene and searched the home, where they found two additional bodies. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department requested the assistance of Indiana State Police Detectives and Indiana State Police crime scene investigators.

Police previously said Burton may have been heading to Tennessee, Missouri or Texas. Investigators believe he was responsible for killing the victims.

“We believe Richard Burton is responsible for the deaths inside the home.  If we get information on something different, our detectives will follow those leads until the end,” said Burton.

The names of the three victims and their exact causes of death won’t be released until an autopsy is performed.  Autopsies on the victims are scheduled for Tuesday in Salem, Ind.
