IMPD investigating fatal pedestrian accident on city’s near east side
INDIANAPOLIS — Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department are investigating after a man was hit and killed while crossing the street on the city’s near east side.
The accident happened shortly after 5 a.m. in the 3300 block of East Washington Street. Officers on the scene say the man had just gone to White Castle at LaSalle and Washington. He was struck by an eastbound car when he stepped onto the pavement to cross Washington Street.
Officials say the man was taken to the hospital, and he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the red Dodge hatchback that reportedly hit the victim remained on the scene to talk with investigators. Police say the driver cooperated and submitted to a field sobriety test after giving a statement.
Other witnesses remained at the crash site this morning, including one woman who claimed it was her boyfriend who was struck.
IMPD blocked off two lanes of eastbound traffic on eastbound Washington Street right at the intersection of LaSalle Street. Investigators marked about a dozen items as evidence in the street including a pair of sneakers, a cell phone, a pack of cigarettes and what appeared to be a bag of food. The scene was cleared and the road re-opened by 7 a.m.
The victim has not yet been identified by investigators.
