INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Police said a deadly Mother’s Day shooting on the west side of Indianapolis appears to be a case of self-defense.

Officers were called to the 3800 block of West Michigan Street around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, where they found a man unresponsive in a parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The man was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition but later died from his wounds.

Officers were then dispatched to the 70 block of North Lynhurst after a 30-year-old man told them he’d shot the victim. He was taken to IMPD Headquarters for questioning.

According to IMPD, the man told detectives that several people were gathered for a celebration when they saw a car driving erratically, doing burnouts and donuts in the presence of small children. Several people called the police to report the driver’s behavior, but the man drove off before officers could arrive.

He returned later and threatened to shoot people because someone called the police on him. He started chasing after another man and threatened to kill him.

The second man, fearing that others in the vicinity could get hurt, pulled his handgun and shot the driver several times. He then left the scene and called police to report what happened. Police said he had a valid handgun permit.

Detectives consulted with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and decided not to arrest the man pending further review of the case.
