Police locate witness wanted for questioning following officer-involved shooting in Brownsburg

BROWNSBURG, Ind. – Police have located a woman wanted for questioning following an officer-involved shooting in Brownsburg that sent a male to the hospital.

The shooting occurred near the 500 block of East Main Street at approximately 9:25 p.m. Monday following a violent traffic stop.

As a small west side suburb, police investigating an officer involved shooting does not happen often in Brownsburg.

“I don’t think this is something the Brownsburg community is used to,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine.

Sgt. Perrine says after being pulled over at O’Dell and Main Street Monday night, an armed suspect began to fight with Brownsburg police officers.

“At some point the officers got into a physical altercation with the suspect. During that altercation a taser was deployed and shots were fired from one police officer,” said Perrine.

Police say they were originally called to an attempted robbery on Ashwood Circle in the Ashwood subdivision. The victim in the incident was able to tell police the suspects left in a white Cadillac Escalade. Responding officers spotted the Cadillac at Main Street and O'Dell Street.

“Right now the details of that call are kind of fuzzy, but we do understand a gun was pointed at another individual,” said Perrine.

Minutes later officers stopped the vehicle and saw two males and a female in the vehicle.

After tussling with police, investigators say Julio Serrano who lives in Illinois, was hit by the gunfire. Serrano remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Marek Mikolajczyc, 31, was taken out of the vehicle and into police custody. He's not facing any charges at this time.

Another passenger Brittani Griebahn ran away, although police consider her more of a witness and not a suspect. She was located Tuesday night.

“She was inside the vehicle that was stopped and during the chaos she slipped away from the scene,” said Perrine.

Investigators say a handgun belonging to the suspect was recovered on scene and they add people in Brownsburg shouldn’t be concerned for their safety.

“At this point we have no belief there is any added danger to Brownsburg or the community,” said Perrine.

Neighbors who heard the gunfire say the shooting appears to be justified, but state police want to make sure that’s the case.

“I mean that the purpose of the investigation.  If we knew it was a justified shooting right off the bat, an investigation wouldn’t be necessary. We want to make sure this is right,” said Perrine.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The suspect is said to be in stable condition.
