Police: IMPD arrests 3 men for series of shootings and robberies targeting Hispanic men

Scene of shooting on Feb. 7, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis police arrest a trio of suspects following a series of shootings and armed robberies.  Police say a number of those crimes targeted Hispanic victims on the east side.

Opening his car door, a man who just got off work was quickly chased by two armed thieves into his apartment building near 48th and Mitthoefer.

Once inside, the robbers pistol whipped the man’s roommate.

“Two or three times I got hit,” said Lara Israel.

Now wounded and bruised, that man says the suspects then kicked in another door and shot his roommate in the leg.

“These guys didn’t play man.  These guys were for real,” said Israel.cbs4-robbery-suspects

Israel says seconds later the suspects ran away from the apartment complex which sits right across from John Marshall high school, but not before threatening the victims not to call 911.

Just a few hours before that violent assault, another Hispanic man reported being shot by two men here at the nearby Spanish Oaks apartments, that shooting victim also survived and it didn’t take long for police to connect the same suspects to at least 3 shootings and robberies.

Fortunately, police arrested the two suspects and a third man thought to be connected to the crimes during a traffic stop. They’ve been identified as 20-year-old Deja Canady, 17-year-old Jamel Hoskin and 18-year-old Anthony Harmon.

“Obviously it’s a big deal to have individuals taken into custody because having them off the streets makes it safer in our city,” said IMPD officer Aaron Hamer.

Pools of blood still cover the apartment floor where the Israel and his friend waited for police to arrive.  Living in the traditionally high crime area of 38th and Mitthoefer, he wishes police could do more to keep innocent people safe.

“Sometimes we work we come a little late from the job so we need more police in this area.  There are too many gangsters right here in this area,” said Israel.

Right now police are not releasing the names of the three suspects.  They’re still working out exactly how many crimes they may be connected to.
