‘Unforgiving’ ice conditions trap Indy drivers for hours

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — At least one person is dead and dozens more injured after slick conditions put Indy’s roads on lock down Saturday morning.

IMPD tweeted that between just Marion and Hendricks Counties, police responded to nearly 200 accidents between 10 p.m Friday night and 4 a.m. Saturday morning.  Thirty six of those involved injuries.

Massive car pileups and wrecked semi-trucks clogged the interstate and highways.  Indianapolis dispatchers said 911 calls became backed up, and emergency personnel had difficulty reaching injured people and damaged vehicles.  Responders in Wayne Township reported having to get out of their vehicles and walk to accidents.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis issued a Winter Weather Advisory that will remain in effect until 10 a.m.

As of 4 o’clock this morning, some drivers had been stuck on the road well over five hours and were running out of gas.

Sergeant John Perrine called the conditions “unforgiving”.
