Semi driver said he remembers choking on cough drop before crashing into Delaware County church

GASTON, Ind.– Police say a semi driver was taken to the hospital after crashing into a church in Delaware County.

An Indiana State Police trooper was traveling south on I-69 near the 248 mile marker when he saw vehicles pulling onto the shoulder. The drivers pointed across the interstate, where he saw a semi with a flatbed trailer had just ran through the Living Hope Church, located at 14300 County Road 900 West, approximately 50 yards east of the interstate.

The driver of the semi, 44-year-old Daniel Castel of Roseville, MI, was out of the truck and had non-life threatening injuries.

Castel said the last thing he remembered choking on a cough drop as he drove northbound on I-69. The semi ran through the interstate fence and drove into the southwest corner of the church.

No one was in the church at the time. A four-car crash took place as people slowed to look at the scene, police said.

The semi crash remains under investigation.
