COLUMBUS, Ind. – Thousands of dollars are missing from the Wayne Township Fire Department in Columbus and the man who was in charge of the accounts is nowhere to be found.

An investigation is underway into the accounts of the fire department’s accounts, said board president Jason Perry. $44,000 is missing and he believes the former treasurer allegedly forged signatures and used fire funds on family vacations, big-ticket purchases, and to start a business on the side.

That treasurer resigned in October. Perry said no one can seem to get a hold of him.

“We really was disappointed. It’s really, really heartbreaking,” said Perry.

Even with the missing funds, Perry vows to keep the fire station operational using money from fundraiser and whatever they have left in the budget.

“We’re family oriented. So it doesn’t matter if it comes out of our own pockets or you know, out of our own accounts. We will maintain property protection and people protection in our community.”

CBS4 tried to reach out to the former treasurer for comment, but the phone number had been disconnected.

Perry added there is a state audit underway and when the report is finished he will find out exactly how much money was taken and if any charges will be filed.
