NEW YORK — It just got even easier to binge on Netflix.

Netflix announced on Wednesday members now have the option to download movies and shows to watch offline later. This means you can finally watch Gilmore Girls and Stranger Things while on a flight or stuck in the subway.

The feature comes free of cost with all Netflix memberships.

4 Fast Facts

  • Netflix will allow subscribers to download shows and movies for offline use
  • Competitors have offered the same service while Netflix has been hesitant to do so
  • Feature allows subscribers to download shows to watch when they don’t have a reliable connection to stream
  • The company said feature is available for all subscribers

Up until now, you need a place with a reliable internet connection to access the streaming service. But Netflix wants to make its product more nimble to suit the lives of those on-the-go.

The company previously argued the feature was unnecessary, calling it a “short term fix for a bigger problem.” That problem, of course, being wireless internet availability.

But its competitor Amazon Prime embraced offline downloads for iOS and Android users more than a year ago.

According to Netflix’s Help Center page, “you’ll want to delete” downloaded titles before attempting to download a new content.

It is unclear as of now if there’s a cap on how many shows or films people can download at once.

Netflix said the feature is included in all plans and available for phones and tablets on Android and iOS. From the company’s announcement:

To start downloading today, please update your Netflix app to the most recent version and take us with you to enjoy Netflix everywhere you go. If you have any questions, please visit our Help Center.
