Suspects facing charges after officer-involved shooting that stemmed from family dispute
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two people have been arrested in connection with Friday’s officer-involved shooting on the near east side.
Police say they found Mark Buggs, 30, and Monterio Mack, 25, shooting at each other when they responded to a report of criminal mischief in the 1800 block of East Brookside Avenue around 3 p.m.
The officer gave verbal commands for Buggs and Mack to stop shooting, but they continued. At that point, the officer fired shots towards the suspects.
Buggs was injured in the shootout and was transported to an area hospital. He will be arrested on two active warrants for narcotics offenses.
Mack fled the scene after the officer fired shots. Police say he was located and arrested around 4 a.m. Saturday. He faces a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a weapon causing serious bodily injury.
Investigators say the suspects know each other and their families had been going through a day-long dispute that led to the violence. The shooting may have stemmed from an incident over clothing.
“We’re seeing a reduction in homicides and shootings over robberies and narcotics, but we’ve seen an uptick in shootings involved with altercations and family problems and individuals who know each other,” said IMPD Major Richard Riddle.
Detectives urge anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317)262-TIPS(8477). Information give via Crime Stoppers should be considered anonymous.
