Police investigate more than a dozen broken windows at south side apartment complex

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – IMPD is investigating more than a dozen broken car windows at a south side apartment complex as a random act of vandalism.

“Not something that you see commonly that people just go around and break car windows,” IMPD Spokesman James Gillespie said.

The vandalism happened sometime Saturday morning at the Sycamore Apartment Complex on the south side.

The responding officers noted in their report that the broken windows could have been a targeted  act of violence at the complex’s large Burmese population, but further investigation didn’t support that theory.

“At this point, detectives do not believe this was a targeted vandalism occurrence,” Gillespie said. “It could have been anything from a group of kids coming through the apartment complex and deciding they just wanted to smash some windows, damage some property and just not thinking about what they were doing in the process.”

“It’s hardly a holiday spirit," victim Kevin Spencer said about the crime, which happened just two days after Thanksgiving.

The apartment’s property manager says this is the first time something like this has ever happened at the complex and she’s asked IMPD to increase its patrols in the area moving forward.

“It’s very much out of the norm. Just given the amount of damage," Spencer said. "You know at least 12 cars if not more were hit all throughout the complex  so you just feel pretty powerless.”

IMPD is asking anyone with information on this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
