BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University’s Zander Diamont wasn’t the starting quarterback for the Hoosiers this year, but there’s no doubt he’s definitely a fan favorite. He’s accounted for four rushing touchdowns this year, including a crucial last minute score that helped IU beat Purdue on Saturday.

That’s why it was startling news to Hoosier fans that Diamont will end his football career after the team’s bowl game.

The junior quarterback went through senior day activities at Memorial Stadium on Saturday and plans to graduate this summer.

Wilson first confirmed Diamont’s decision during a post-game interview. He said Diamont first approached him with the news last week after discussing his health with his parents. “One of his gifts is his ability to run but he’s a small guy and he plays with a lot of heart and a lot of courage,” Wilson told reporters. “I think some of those hits are adding up on him.”

Diamont never put a specific number on exactly how many concussions he’s sustained during his football career, but he did say “It’s a lot.” Many of the concussions, he said, happened while he was in high school.

“I think that for my safety and my future – I’m not going to the NFL – I need my brain. So that was the decision,” Diamont said.

Even though we won’t see Diamont on the football field after this year, we may still see him on TV or even the big screen.  He said he plans to return home to Los Angeles after graduation, and he hopes to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. His father Don Diamont is a soap opera star best known for his roles in The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.
