INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Millions of Americans will patronize local businesses this Small Business Saturday, and Massachusetts Ave. in downtown Indianapolis is no exception.

This year, more than 20 shops participated in a joint effort to draw shoppers downtown to “shop small.” The Riley Area Development Corp. coordinated the Mass Ave. Small Business Saturday event to facilitate local business giveaways and “swag bags,” featuring surprises and offers from different shops.

Crimson Tate in the 800 block of Mass Ave. said it’s shoppers lined up ahead of the 9 a.m. open to get deals on quilting supplies and a sneak peak at new fabric designs.

Meanwhile, at Indy Reads Books, any purchases for new and used books will help Indy Reads’ mission of promoting literacy in Indianapolis.

Small Business Saturday means big business for a lot of the shops on Mass Ave. Homespun, located in the 800 block, says it’s one of their top-two biggest sales days of the year. Not to mention, the holiday shopping season represents roughly a quarter of their annual sales.

“This is a good time of year for us,” said Amanda Mauer Taflinger, owner of Homespun.

“Last year, in 2015, nationally, about 95 million customers came out,” said Cheryl Grubb, with the Small Business Association.

The day pumps billions into the national economy and draws attention to local makers and shop owners as an alternative to big box stores for holiday sales.

Each Mass Ave. business offers their own internal promotions, from discounts to giveaways; stores opened for twelve hours between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
