Suspect in serious condition after officer-involved shooting on near east side; no officers injured

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Police are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting on the near east side.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of East Brookside Avenue around 3 p.m. on a report of criminal mischief in progress. Someone had thrown a brick through the window of a vehicle.

An officer arrived and found two suspects shooting at each other. The officer gave verbal commands for them to stop shooting, and the suspects continued. At that point, the officer fired shots towards the suspects.

One suspect went to the ground. The other got into a vehicle and fled from the scene.

It is unclear if the suspect was struck by the officer's bullets or bullets from the other suspect. Police do not believe the other suspect was injured. The officer was also not injured. Police said he is a fairly new officer and rendered first aid after the shooting.

Investigators say the suspect know each other and the families had been going through a day-long dispute that led to the violence. Other incidents of shots fired in the area may be related to this shooting. The shooting may have stemmed from an incident over clothing.

"We're seeing a reduction in homicides and shootings over robberies and narcotics, but we've seen an uptick in shootings involved with altercations and family problems and individuals who know each other," said IMPD Major Richard Riddle.

Police have not released the name or description of the suspect still at large.
