UPDATE: Police now investigating murder of couple; woman succumbs to injuries Friday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A woman who was found suffering from a gunshot wound after crashing her car succumbed to her injuries Friday morning, confirmed officials.

Jessica Downey, 21, of Vincennes, Ind., was discovered by police slumped over the steering wheel in a vehicle near 25th and Adams late Wednesday night.  Downey was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Just two hours later, officers were flagged down by a neighbor who discovered a man dead from multiple gunshot wounds in an alley off 25th and Oxford, just two blocks away from where Downey was found.

Detectives identified the man as 20-year-old Evans Johnson of Camby, Indiana.  Police believe the murders are related because the victims were dating.

The two shooting scenes occurred less than a half mile apart on the city’s near northeast side. The neighborhood sits between two of the city’s traditional high crime focus areas, which has seen renewed efforts this year to stop the violence.

Neighbors FOX59 spoke with on Thursday expressed their concerns over the violence in the area.

“I heard pow pow pow pow pow.  I knew what that was.  You don’t have to be no rocket scientist,” said neighbor Hardy Thomas.

Thomas heard the deadly gunfire but didn’t realize a 20-year-old died until we told him.

“When you said somebody was dead in there.  Wow.  I didn’t know all that,” said Thomas.

Last month, led by a civic minded 8-year-old boy, a peace walk was held less than a mile away in the same neighborhood near 30th and Sherman.

A group called the Concerned OG’s has also been holding weekly peace walks in the area the last few months.

“You know the young boy is trying to walk around here and have the walk and stuff and that’s good,” said Thomas.  “The violence needs to stop.  It definitely needs to stop.”

Thomas, like many on the east side, is tired of all the violence.

“With all that violence and stuff, we don’t need that.  We just don’t need it,” said Thomas.  “Nobody wants that.  You got family, grandmother and kids here.  Don’t nobody want that.”

So far no arrests have been made in either of the two shootings, and police don’t have any good suspect information to give out.

Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
