Ben Roethlisberger’s foundation provides grant to Montgomery County Sheriff’s office for new K-9

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– Colts fans will be rooting against quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers Thanksgiving night when the teams face off at Lucas Oil Stadium, but “Big Ben” is coming to Indiana bearing gifts.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation gave a grant to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office, who will use the money to buy a new K-9 officer.

“The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation for its generosity in awarding us the $10,000 grant for the purchase of a new K-9. Funding a new K-9 for the sheriff’s office will have a such a positive effect not only for the sheriff’s office, but for the entire community. Again, thank you to Mr. Roethlisberger and the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation,” said Montgomery County Sheriff’s office Chief Deputy Ryan Needham.

During the season, Roethlisberger’s foundation is giving grants to police and fire departments in the communities of each regular season away game. The foundation also distributes grants in the Pittsburgh area.

This marks the 10th season that the foundation has distributed grants to K-9 units. The mission of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation is to support K-9 units of police and fire departments throughout the United States, with a particular emphasis on support for service dogs in Pittsburgh, Pa. Roethlisberger and the Foundation also support Make-A-Wish.

In commenting on why the mission of the foundation is so important to him, Roethlisberger said, “We’re very fortunate to be in the position that we are able to help these K-9 units. The work that is performed by the dogs and their handlers as well as the bond that is formed is incredible. We’re just thrilled to do our small part.”

More than $170,000 in grants were distributed to K-9 units around the country during the 2015 NFL season, including $93,250 in the Pittsburgh community. The Foundation has distributed in excess of $1.5 million since 2007.

You can support the foundation on a crowdfunding campaign here. Big Ben is pledging $1,000 per touchdown this season to his foundation. Supporters can increase the impact by pledging to donate any amount per touchdown.
