INDIANAPOLIS -- Before the food and family time, there’s the Thanksgiving travel rush.
AAA projects more than 48 million Americans are traveling 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving. That’s an increase of one million travelers from last year and the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.
In Indiana alone, AAA expects more than 1, 089,00 people will travel 50 or more miles from home. That's up by 22,000 people compared to last year.
Experts say they think the increase is tied to improvements in the economy and consumer spending, despite a recent small increase in gas prices and a 21% increase in airfare prices.
While 3.7 million Americans plan on flying to their holiday destination, AAA says 89% of travelers overall are driving. Travel by cruises, trains and buses are expected to increase slightly as well.
